During his early childhood, Tom lived in a variety of places: Point Richmond and El Sobrante (near San Francisco), and Mount Shasta in northern California. But he spent most of his childhood in Santa Monica, went to Santa Monica schools, and eventually graduated from Santa Monica High School (Samohi).
Tom and his mom lived on a hill in southern Santa Monica, with a sweeping view to the south, toward Venice and beyond to Los Angeles international airport.
Some of the things Tom and I enjoyed doing together during his childhood were going to the movies, taking walks and skateboarding around Venice, going to Santa Monica pier to play video games at the arcade, hiking and mountain biking in the Santa Monica Mountains, and going out for pizza at Shakey’s on Washington Boulevard. At Shakey’s we would order a pepperoni pizza, Tom’s favorite, and then play Pacman, Space Invaders, or other video games while the pizza was being made.
